Tasting- Butterfly Kiss Moscato
Name: Butterfly Kiss
Variety: Moscato
Region: N/A
Country: Chile
Year: 2012
Price: $13
Winery Review: Aromas of honeydew and apricot, gently kissed by orange blossom, candied pineapple and a hint of lime zest.
My Review: This wine was way way way too sweet for me. It tasted like I was sucking on a jolly rancher (and those shitters give me horrible headaches). This wine was not for me. Tasted like all sugar.
Tasting - Purple Paws Zinfandel
Name: Purple Paws
Variety: Zinfandel
Region: Lodi, California
Country: USA
Year: 2012
Price: $15.00
Winery Review: It smells like ripe boysenberries and cherries, and tastes generous and broad without being too full bodied. It finishes with more fruit notes and those who love a little spice and smooth tannins will be happy.
Tasting- Purple Paws Cabernet Sauvignon Non Vintage
Name: Purple Paws
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon Non Vintage
Region: Lodi, California
Country: USA
Year: N/A
Price: $15.00
Winery Review: If a Cabernet can be smooth and creamy, this one is. It offers plenty of fruit flavor, smooth tannins that coat the mouth in a good way, plus a plush texture that keeps it from being even a bit harsh. With light body, a soft mouthfeel and lingering finish, there’s much to like.
My Review: I absolutely love this wine. This was the wine that I decided to buy and am currently drinking. Red wine is definitely my favorite type of wine, so I am biased. I love the smooth but fruity flavor of this wine. It has a great taste that lasts in your mouth. It kind of reminds me of joy and happiness. Not bitter and great aftertaste.
Tasting- Rosemount Chardonnay
Name: Rosemount
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: N/A
Country: South Australia
Year: 2013
Price: $10.00
Winery Review: This world-renowned wine shows peachy tropical fruit and melon characters on the nose, with a hint of citrus freshness and judicious use of oak. The palate is generous and soft with full, ripe tropical flavors folded into a creamy backdrop that is beautifully structured with a long satisfying finish.
My Review: I enjoyed this wine more than the first one (La Lejania Sauvignon Blanc). This wine had a more distinct taste and wasn't so bland. I definitely tasted a big hint of fruit as well as a woody finish. I do enjoy a nice chardonnay and this one is not bad.
Tasting- La Lejania Sauvignon Blanc
Name: La Lejania
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Central Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2015
Price: $10.00
Winery Review: Aromas of green apple and citrus are as classic as it gets for Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. This is straight forward but enjoyable, with modest minerality. Flavors of citrus and gooseberry carry over onto a refreshing finish.
My review: This wine off the back was definitely not my favorite. I don't know if it was just me but it did not taste like much. It seemed very light and flavorless. Kind of a sweet after tone with a hint citrus. I did not have it with food.

Hello! My name is Ian Alworth and I am a senior studying finance at Virginia Tech. I have decided to take this geography of wine class not just because it is going to be less work than my finance classes, but because I am genuinely interested in learning more about wine. Wine has always been a hobby of mine. Whenever my uncle comes on family vacation or visits, I hone into the conversations dealing with wine. Sadly enough to say, I am no where skilled enough to contribute to the conversation. I hope taking this course will give me a broad background on different types of wine and will lead me to be able to pick a nice bottle when I am on a date with the girl of my dreams ;).
Ever since I was old enough to drink (wink wink), I've always liked wine; white wine to be specific. I actually hated red wine back in the day. It was too bitter for me and I had a sweet tooth for white wine. I started drinking sweet sweet wine such as moscato and other dessert wines. Over the years when my balls started to sag more, I developed a taste for red wine. I absolutely love red wine now! It is very similar to my switch from light beers to IPA's. My taste buds have changed so much that I now will never buy a bottle of white wine. I will choose red over white any day.
I am very excited to start this class and see how much I can truly learn about wine. I want to be skilled enough to go to business dinners and actually have a say (intelligently) in the type of wine that the table should order. I also really want to impress my uncle with my wine intellect, since he has a huge obsession with wine all together. He has his own wine cellar while living in NYC (yes, dedication and very $$$).
I believe I am ready to take on the wine world and I'm going to drink every last drop.
